East Africa: Regional Centre Launched to Promote Renewable Energy

Arusha — The East African Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (EACREEE) will be hosted at the Makerere University's College of Engineering, Art, Design and Technology.

 
Speaking at the launch last week, the EAC deputy secretary general (Productive and Social Sectors) Ms Jesca Eriyo said the main aim is to ensure availability of sufficient, reliable, cost effective and environmentally friendly energy sources.
 
"The centre we are launching today will develop and implement a coherent regional Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency policy framework for the EAC and facilitate its implementation at national levels as well as execute regional programmes and projects with other Partners and mobilise funding; create synergies with ongoing programmes," she said.
 
United Nations Industrial Development Organization (Unido) representative, Philippe Scholtès, emphasised the importance of inclusive and sustainable industrial development, as well as the role of sustainable energy and private-public partnerships in this respect.
 
He said the global network of regional sustainable Energy Centres assists Development Partners in effective and efficient way.
 
The facility will act as a regional think-tank and focal point for sustainable energy activities and issues.
 
The centre is expected to strengthen on-going national activities in the areas of policy and capacity development as well as boost knowledge management and awareness rising on investment and promote businesses.
