Five nurseries for Trans Nzoia banana farming

Posted on :Tuesday , 21st October 2014

The Trans Nzoia government has established five tissue culture banana hardening nurseries.

Governor Patrick Khaemba said the nurseries are erected in Kwanza, Kiminini, Cherangany and Endebess constituencies.

He said the nurseries will help farmers access certified high quality banana seedlings.

Khaemba said this is one way of diversifying from maize farming to ensure farmers have money throughout the year.

"We are not telling our farmers to abandon maize, but diversify because maize is only harvested once in a year," he said.

Last year, the county bought more than 15,000 banana plantlets from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Another 30,000 plantlets have been paid for and will be distributed to farmers soon.
