Tanzania: World Bank Releases Sh100 Million for New Dry Port

Dodoma — The World Bank (WB) through the Local Investment Climate (LIC) has disbursed Sh100 million for the construction of a dry port here, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa revealed yesterday.

The Premier directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the office of the regional commissioner to set aside land for the construction of the port.

Speaking when launching the project for the expansion and upgrading the Dodoma Airport, Mr Majaliwa said the fifth phase government was determined to uplift the economic status of the designated country's capital.

According to him, the ongoing major expansion of the airport would enable more sophisticated aircraft to land in the capital, a move that would open up its economic potentials.

"We'll soon see bigger planes including those of Air Tanzania, Precision Air and FastJet landing here bringing in international tourists on their way to different destinations like Tarangire, Ruaha and many others. This means you need to prepare yourselves to use such opportunities," said he.

Mr Majaliwa added that the government was also on top gear in its search for funds for the construction of the Msalato International Airport also based here.

"The renovation of this airport doesn't mean the government has given up its quest to construct the Msalato international airport. We have plans to ensure the major airport is built. We'll need it for bigger aircraft," he detailed.

For his part, the minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Prof Makame Mbarawa, said the ministry had already prepared a Civil Aviation Master Plan, one that targets to upgrade infrastructure facilities at different airports in the country.

According to him, the airports earmarked for renovation include those based in Lindi, Mtwara, Mwanza, Kigoma, Tabora and Shinyanga to mention but a few.

Tanzania Airport Authority acting director general George Sambali hailed the government for approving funds for upgrading the airport.

He said the authority was working hard to promote high quality airport services and authority in cost-effective manner in order to become a world class operator in the provision of airport facilities and services.

Dodoma regional commissioner Jordan Rugimbana hailed the fifth phase government for giving Dodoma considerable attention and priority, whereby he said the opportunity would be used effectively.
