Car makers flag SA as base for drive into Africa

 JOHANNESBURG - The global automotive industry produced more than 91-million vehicles in 2015, 1.1% up from 2014.

 
Of that number, Africa accounted for 960,527 units, with SA producing the bulk of these at 615,658.

A solar-powered computer lab bridges digital divide

 An ordinary bus-turned computer lab is boosting digital literacy among thousands of youths in Nairobi’s slums.

 
Inside the bus used by Craft Silicon Foundation as a classroom for computer classes in Kawangware, Nairobi. The vehicle had its interior customised, its seats removed and replaced with 64 chairs and 32 reading tables. Each table has a computer desktop, modifications that have turned the ordinary bus into a typical computer lab.

Dadaab power station to spur Garissa growth

Energy CS Charles Keter yesterday commissioned the Dadaab power station.
 
It will provide electricity to more than 200,000 people have electricity connection under the Rural Electrification Programme.The project is co-funded by UNHCR and the Kenyan government for Sh200 million. Dadaab and neighbouring public primary schools will have electricity next month, Keter said.

US firm Cummins starts 12MW Baringo power production in October

 American engineering firm Cummins Inc has set October as the date to begin generating electricity from a toxic shrub popularly referred to as ‘Mathenge,’ after more than two years of false starts blamed on mechanical hitches.

 
The Columbus-based company said it is working to rectify the technical snags that have dogged the 12-megwatt Mathenge power plant in Marigat, Baringo County, which was due to begin feeding the grid in June 2014.Read more »

Ethiopia cements economic ties with Turkey with $13.5 million salt manufacturing plant

 An Ethiopian- Turkish deal that mulled creation of a salt manufacturing industry has come to fruition with the establishment of a $13.5 million plant covering 50,000 square meters at the Afar regional state in Northern Ethiopia.

 
Currently, the manufacturing company has the capacity to create more than 300 job opportunities. This figure will reach 8,000 when the company becomes operational at its full capacity.

Ethiopia: East Africa Metals Requests Gold Mining License

 East African Metals, a Canadian mine development company with an interest in exploration projects, has requested a license from the Ministry of Mines, Petroleum & Natural Gas, to start the large scale extraction of gold and silver in Ethiopia.

 
The company has submitted its application to produce the minerals, in Tigray regional state, Terakimti locality.

Kenya is set to train Liberian health workers in specialized health services

 Kenya will offer training opportunities in specialized health services to Liberia, Health Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Cleopa Mailu has said.

Tanzania Purchase 2 Bombardier Q400 Aircraft

The Government of Tanzania recently signed a purchase agreement for two Q400 aircrafts with Canadian manufacturer Bombardier.
 
The aircrafts will be delivered with a 76-seat configuration at the price of USD62m.
 
They will be used for commercial airline operations by Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), the national carrier of Tanzania.

President Uhuru Kenyatta asks landowners to support infrastructural projects

President Uhuru Kenyatta has asked those with land through which infrastructural projects are passing through to surrender it. Otherwise, the President said the government will forcibly seize it.
