Africa: Power Plants Gear Up for Digital Transformation of Power Generation

Posted on :Wednesday , 28th December 2016

At nearly every industry event and customer meeting over the past year or so, the conversation has inevitably turned to the subject of “change.” It can be changes happening within our industry, or broader changes in the economy or society – like the impact of smartphones and social media on daily life.

A few days ago, at GE’s Power Services Middle East & Africa Customer Summit, themed ‘The Digital Transformation: Our Journey Together’, we had the opportunity to address many of these changes within the power generation industry head on. While focused on this region, we addressed a number of different ideas, big and small. For example, one of our panelists, Ray Wang, is a Silicon Valley research analyst whose rallying cry is “dominate digital disruption before it dominates you.”

During a series of panel discussions and breakout sessions, we explored with our customers how change, both within and outside our industry, is affecting everything from the digital transformation of power generation to the very business models employed by power plant operators.

In response to this mountain of change, we showcased our new portfolio of Fleet360* Total Plant Services Solutions most relevant to the region and our customers during the Summit. The goal was to help our customers adapt to and leverage these changes to unleash better performance, lower risks and increase efficiencies across all types of gas and steam plants.

We explained how we can be a single-service partner of choice for project scopes ranging from short-cycle maintenance support through long-term operational and business strategies. And we talked about our “plant-as-a-system” expertise in packaging technologies, regardless of project scope, that optimize overall operational performance and asset life at the plant and fleet levels.

Through a series of breakout sessions, we then took a more focused look at three types of solutions we offer that leverage technology changes to benefit our customers’ operations. These include solutions to achieve efficiency gains that can impact overall performance; solutions to position a plant or fleet with the broad flexibility required for these changing times; and digital solutions, such as software and data analytics that can have a strong impact on power generation.

Change is the topic of conversation for a reason, and at GE, we’re committed to supporting our customers to take advantage of a new reality defined by higher reliability and efficiency across the electricity value network and to realize the benefits offered by the digital transformation of energy.
