Kenya: Nairobi to Promote Urban Agriculture, Distribute Green Houses to Schools

Posted on :Wednesday , 6th July 2016

The Nairobi County will spend Sh10.2 million to promote urban agriculture by distributing green houses to schools and rehabilitation homes.

The county will also spend Sh13.5 million on water harvesting facilities to sustain the green house project meant to enhance food security through agri-business and urban and peri-urban faming technologies, a county official said on Tuesday.

Speaking during the launch of the project at Baba Dogo Primary School, the executive Committee member Agriculture, Livestock development and fisheries Bernard Mugenyo said it will act as model training centres to farmers.

The county has also funded five groups with small milk processing and marketing equipment and milk dispenser projects at a cost of Sh13 million, Dr Mugenyo said.

"The green house and micro garden farming, small livestock farming and fish farming technologies can easily be adopted by the youth hence addressing the problem of youth unemployment", said Dr Mugenyo.

Nairobi County faces severe challenges related to food safety and quality as at least 70 per cent of Nairobi's food is supplied by other Counties.

In the 2016/17 financial year, the county had set aside Sh150 million for planned development projects aimed at promoting urban agriculture in the City.

Sh40 million will be used for installation of green houses and water tanks, SH53 million for construction of poultry and rabbit units and installation of milk dispensers, Sh32 million for establishment of animal shelters, clinics, laboratories and construction of a modern poultry slaughterhouse and Sh25 million for construction and rehabilitation of fish ponds.
