Tanzania, Kenya Move to Avert Trade Disputes

 Dar es Salaam/Arusha — Tanzania and Kenya plan to form a joint committee and set up a channel of communication to deal with future trade disputes.

 
The decision was reached during a meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Dr Augustine Mahiga, and his Kenyan counterpart, Ms Amina Mohamed, last Sunday in Nairobi.

Tanzania signs $154 mln contract with Chinese firm to expand main port

 Tanzania’s government signed a $154 million contract on Saturday with the state-run China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to expand the main port in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

 
Tanzania is seeking financing for infrastructure projects as part of its plans to transform the country into a regional transport and trade hub.

Scaling Africa’s solar infrastructure

 The power generators are essential for both home and businesses in cities across the continent, even in the economic hubs of Lagos, Nigeria, and Nairobi, Kenya. Almost two-thirds of Africa’s 1.2bn population lack access to electricity and, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB), annual power consumption in sub-Saharan Africa per capita is 181 kilowatt hours (kWh), compared with 6,500 kWh in Europe and more than double that in the US.

 German solar equipment rental company Redavia GmbH has put on stream a 674-kW photovoltaic (PV) plant in Tanzania for gold producer Shanta Gold Ltd (LON:SHG).

Redavia provides gold mine in Tanzania with more solar power

 The company has increased the mine’s PV power generation capacity to 674 kW with the supply of another solar container.

Hydropower supporting mini-grid development in Tanzania

 The 5MW Tulila Hydroelectric Plant in the Ruvuma region of Tanzania is helping to reduce dependence on diesel generators and providing valuable power to local rural communities. The plant is run by the Benedictine Sisters of St Agnes, who already operate a smaller plant, Lupilo (400kW), on the Ruvuma River.

Tanzanian geothermal plans win climate funds investment

 The finance from Climate Investment Funds (CIF) will develop the Ngozi geothermal steam field in southwestern Tanzania and “ultimately showcase the technology’s broader potential in the country’s energy transformation”, the African Development Bank (AfDB) said.

AfDB grants Tanzania to develop Ngozi geothermal steam field

 Tanzania received the fund through the bank’s Climate Investment Funds’ (CIF) Scaling-up Renewable Energy Programme (SREP).
