IITA reaffirms its commitment to transforming Africa’s agriculture as it marks its 50th Anniversary

 The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) has vowed to redouble its efforts to transform Africa’s agriculture. This was expressed by IITA Director for Eastern Africa Dr Victor Manyong at a ceremony organized at the Institute’s Eastern Africa hub offices in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, recently to mark its 50th anniversary.

Tanzania to exterminate quelea birds to save rice

  Tanzania plans to conduct an aerial bird control operation at Ndung'u Irrigation Scheme in the country's northern district of Same in an effort to wipe out quelea birds in the area.

 
Rosemary Sitaki, Same District Commissioner, said that the aircraft has been leased from the Desert Locust Control Organization for East Africa (DLCO-EA).

Tanzanian start-up turns urban waste into 'plastic lumber'

 A young Tanzanian entrepreneur is turning the country’s mounting plastic waste into "lumber" to help meet demand for housing in its growing cities, in an effort to reduce depletion of forests.

 
Christian Mwijage decided he could tackle those problems in one go - by turning discarded plastic bottles into building materials that can be used instead of wood.

Catalyst buys stake in regional printing firm

 Private equity firm Catalyst Principal Partners has acquired a minority stake in regional printing and packaging family business Kensta Group.

 
Catalyst Managing Director Rajal Upadhyaya Monday said the funds received would be used to expand Kensta’s subsidiaries in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia and Tanzania.
 
Mr Rajal did not however disclose the amount paid for the stake.

Tanzania: Revival of Kilimanjaro Machine Tools Underway

 THE government through its industrial development and promotion organization National Development Corporation (NDC) has started to revive the once defunct Kilimanjaro Machine Tools Company (KMT) for the manufacture of machines.

 
The KMT General Manager, Eng Adrian Nyaluke, said at the ongoing Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) manufacturing activities started this year accounting to 10 per cent of the total industry capacity.

Kansai Paint agrees to buy African businesses

 Japan’s Kansai Paint has agreed to buy three east African paint companies to tap into one of the world’s fastest-growing regions as part of its global expansion.

Solar power to treat water for 200 thousand refugees in Tanzania

 SolarWorld Americas Inc is providing 1.2 megawatts of high-performance solar panels to power the world's largest solar-powered, safe-water treatment project. The project's systems will serve more than 250,000 Congolese and Burundian people living in three refugee settlements in Western Tanzania.

Tanzania to open renewable energy technology training centre

 The director of the Innovative Technology and Energy Centre (ITEC), Dr Herb Rhee, has announced plans to open a training centre for renewable energy technology in Arusha, Tanzania.

 
According to local media, Tanzania Standard, Dr Rhee said the renewable energy technology centre will open doors in August this year, and will have the capacity to train 1,000 students per year.
