Kenyan farmers grow chives to meet growing export demand

Chives, a herb belonging to the onion family, has become the crop of choice for a group of farmers in Kenya’s Nakuru County   
More than 80 farmers from Bahati constituency of Nakuru County who used to earlier farm maize and beans have switched to growing chives. Forming a group together, and in a partnership with seed company Premier Seeds and Chase Bank, they have bought greenhouses on credit in which they grow chives.

Egyptian firm sets up US$11mn abbatoire in Uganda

Egypt-Uganda Food Security has invested US$11mn in an abattoir near Bombo town in Luwero district, central Uganda
Located about 32 km north of Kampala, the Egyptian company’s new abattoir will process and package meat, mainly beef, for both local and export markets. The abattoir has the ability to slaughter 1,000 cattle daily and can hold up to 5,000 animals. The modern facility also has coolers, skinning equipment and a processing plant.

Dar keen to enhance trade competitiveness

TANZANIA is set to reform trade policies and strategies to cope with challenges in regional and global markets.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Mr Uledi Mussa, said this in Dar es Salaam, during a workshop that brought together various stakeholders in development of trade.

Construction of more rooms in Ramada Encore Hotel in Tanzania to begin

US$ 20m has been set aside for the servicing of Ramada Encore Hotel in Tanzania under Ramada Worldwide,  Managing Director Abdul Ismail has announced.

Mr Ismail said the decision to service the Ramada Encore Hotel in Tanzania was informed by the need to increase hotel rooms in Dar es Salaam which is Tanzania’s capital.

Construction begins on largest gas power plant in sub-Saharan Africa

 

Ghana has begun the construction of what it says will be the largest gas-fired power plant in sub-Saharan Africa to take advantage of the country’s rich reserves of natural gas.

The gas power plant in Ghana, developed by Cummins Cogeneration Limited and WUTA Energy, will generate 300mw of power when completed. The first 140mw phase will be connected to the Ghanian Grid next year.

EMESEK-1 EXPLORATION WELL IN KENYA’S NORTH TURKANA BASIN DISAPPOINTS

The Emesek-1 well which was also the North Turkana basin opener spud in mid-October drilled to a depth of 3000 meters did not encounter commercial hydrocarbons according to the joint venture partners in the Block Tullow Oil (operator), Africa Oil and Maersk Oil.

AIRBORNE GRAVITY GRADIOMETRY SURVEY OVER LAKE TANGANYIKA NORTH BLOCK COMMENCES

The Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has said it has started acquiring a non-invasive Airborne Gravity Gradiometry Survey over wholly operated Lake Tanganyika North Block which cuts across five districts namely; Kigoma rural, Kigoma, Ujiji, Uvinza and Mpanda rural.

Construction At Avon Peaking Power Plant Resumes

Pretoria — KwaDukuza Municipality and Group Five have reached a power deal that will see construction activities resume at Avon Peaking power plant outside Shakaskraal, in KwaZulu-Natal's north coast.

 
This follows the dismissal of about 1 500 construction workers after going on an unprotected strike, which halted construction activities for the past six weeks.

Ethiopia: PM to Inaugurate the New 2 Bln Birr Dashen Brewery

Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn is scheduled to inaugurate Dashen Brewery Share Company's second beer plant tomorrow in Debre Birhan town, 120km northeast of Addis Ababa, producing the same quality of beer as Dashen's first plant in Gonder.

Dar es Salaam — The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) has received four new diesel-electric mainline locomotives and 18 passenger coaches valued at $22.4 million.
