Tanzania: Fuel Retailer Sets Aside Sh70 Million for Start-Ups

Dar es Salaam — Total Tanzania yesterday launched a contest that seeks to award initiators of good business ideas.

 
Dubbed 'Startupper of the year by Total', the initiative will see top three winners going home with a total of Sh70 million.

Rwanda Grants Licences to 20 Mining Companies

Rwanda's Ministry of Natural Resources has granted mining licences to 20 companies and co-operatives that are among the list of 29 approved by the Cabinet.

 
The 29 licences have a total value of Rwf7 billion ($9.4 million) spanning five years. They are the first to be issued under the new mining and quarry law of May 20, 2014 and its ministerial orders. Huila - Transport Minister Unveils Housing Complex in Lubango

Lubango — A housing complex comprising 103 houses was inaugurated on Saturday in Lubango, southern Huila province, by the minister of transport, Augusto da Silva Tomás.

China-Funded National Stadium to Complete

Lilongwe — The Malawi government has expressed satisfaction with a chinese-funded national stadium scheduled to complete later this month in Malawi capital, Lilongwe.

 
In a tour of the multi-million dollar facility on Wednesday, Minister of Transport and Public Works Francis Kasaila said the stadium would not only change the face of the city but also put Malawi on the map in as far as international games are concerned.

SNC Wins Contract to Build Ethiopian Potash Mine and Processing Facility

SNC-Lavalin has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction management contract for a potash mine and processing facility in northeastern Ethiopia.

The project is being developed by Norwegian chemical company, Yara International ASA and is located in the Dallol region of the East African country. Though SNC did not disclose the value of the contract, the facility is designed to produce approximately 600,000 tonnes of sulfate of potash per year.

Solar Energy Lights the Way in Tanzania

 The dusty village of Melela Mlandizi stands 45 kilometres outside of regional hub Morogoro, Tanzania. Far from city infrastructure, its 200 inhabitants would be forgotten but for the installation of a solar power system, harnessing the hot sun that beats down overhead. It's what lights their homes off the city grid.

 
Instead of using dangerous kerosene to light their homes, residents use solar energy, usually in the form of three light bulbs.

Construction of hydropower plants in Rwanda gets financial support

Afritech Energy (AE) and East African Power have signed a US$ 40m agreement that will see the construction of four hydropower plants in Rwanda.

The agreement will involve construction of four hydropower sites in Bihongora, Karambo II, Gatare Sebeya and Muregeya. Other two projects will be in Rustiro and two more in Rubavu.

Nyagak III Small Hydro Power Project in Uganda to be constructed

The construction of Nyagak III Small Hydro Power Project in Uganda is set to commence soon, this is after the Ugandan Government and a German firm signed a US$ a 1.8m agreement.

Construction of phase II of Mombasa port terminal in Kenya to begin

 The construction of phase II of Mombasa port terminal in Kenya will start early  2017, Kenya Ports Authority managing director Gichiri Ndua has said. When complete, the second container terminal  will provide and additional capacity of 470,000 and 550,000 TEUs.

US$400m set aside for Development of Infrastructure and road construction

 Out of the US$1.25bn Eurobond issue,US$400m has been allocated for road construction in Zambia in a bid to boost connectivity in urban and rural areas.

 
According to the Deputy Minister for Finance, Christopher Mvunga, US $410.7m will be channeled towards road infrastructure improvement.
 
He noted that US $268m will go into domestic debt swap and clearance while US $40m will be used for maintaining canals and purchasing.... Read more »
