The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) recently released the Kenya Housing Survey report, showcasing the country’s diverse construction materials. The report highlights the increasing use of durable materials, with a special emphasis on wood and timber, which play a crucial role in building strong, eco-friendly homes.
Wood and timber are widely used across Kenya, especially in counties like Meru (62.9%), Nyeri (49.0%), and Laikipia (34.0%), where they provide sturdy and sustainable wall structures. These materials not only offer durability but also add a natural aesthetic, making homes warm and inviting. Timber construction is particularly favored for its affordability, accessibility, and environmental benefits.
Nationally, 58.9% of Kenyan homes now feature durable flooring, with urban areas like Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kiambu leading the way. Additionally, stone and cement are commonly used, but wood remains a preferred choice in many regions due to its versatility and resilience.
As Kenya continues to develop, the adoption of high-quality timber and wood-based construction is expected to grow, contributing to sustainable housing solutions. This positive shift reflects the country's commitment to innovation and eco-conscious building practices.
